DIAMOND DRILLING CONCRETE STORM WATER PIPE

Case Study of Black Horse Contractors Work for Barrett Homes Taunton

The Problem

Black Horse Contractors had the tricky job of excavating a length of 650mm diameter pipe work several metres long and at given points drill two holes for service pipes to be connected to adjoining houses.

Diamond Hire and Sales pride themselves on their technical advice and expertise when it comes to problems on site and, with the task Black Horse Contractors had in forming holes in a 650mm diameter pipe, this was no exception.

Contracts Manager Richard Patch of Black Horse Contractors called our office for advice and we discussed the possibility of drilling two holes at 187mm diameter into a 650mm diameter pipe.

The pipe was in-situ and was 1.2 metres down an excavated pit. A number of problems presented themselves - the fact you could not get all the way around the pipe meant strapping a rig on to the pipe was not viable and, because the pipe may be lined, the method of bolting the rig down was not an option either.

Diamond Drilling Solution

To solve the problem, Phil Thorpe of Diamond Hire & Sales delivered and demonstrated a DK17 Hand Held Weka diamond drill machine. Black Horse were advised to get a water supply and a suitable generator prior to our arrival and the pipe to be exposed via excavation to the best of their ability.

A template was pre drilled to 187mm in diameter in 10mm thick ply and placed over the desired position on the pipe work. The drill was then connected to a water supply and proceeded to drill within the template until the diamond core drill bit had entered the pipe by approximately 15mm.

When the drill bit had taken hold the template was removed and the hole was drilled to completion. The exercise was then repeated for the second hole and the additional pipe work was then installed ready for back filling. The operation was repeated on a further fifteen excavations.
