DIAMOND DRILLING HOLES FOR STACK PIPES

Case Study of Leadbitters Work for GY Glas Extra Care Home

Diamond Hire & Sales were approached by ‘Leadbitters’ to help them with a problem that was presented to them when it came to forming service holes through the first floor holorib (permanent decking) concrete floor slab.

Hire or Buy the Diamond Drilling Equipment?

Diamond Hire & Sales (DHS) discussed the equipment they would need to produce these openings with a view to hiring the equipment, but it was soon made apparent by the Contracts Manager that the equipment would be required on an ‘as and when’ basis resulting in the equipment standing idle until such times when it would be utilised, therefore paying for wasted hire.

It was discussed by DHS and the management of ‘Leadbitters’ that on this occasion it would work out more cost effective if they were to purchase the equipment and have their labour operate it.

Project Set Up

It was suggested by Phil Thorpe of DHS that a list of specific plant that would be required for such an operation be drawn up and upon delivery a one day visit to demonstrate and to familiarise the plant to Leadbitters operatives.

Leadbitters were to supply prior to our visit a suitable power supply and water source be in place before our arrival.

Upon our arrival the equipment was craned on to the first floor slab and the diamond drilling rig was then assembled and fitted with a 127mm diameter diamond core barrel to commence drilling the holes for stack pipes.

Before any drilling, every measure was taken in consideration to Health and Safety.

After the demonstration on completing two holes through the slab, it was time for Leadbitters operative to operate the rig under DHS’s supervision. It was only when Leadbitters operative was completely confident and satisfied on the drilling of the holes that DHS left site.

DHS keep in touch with Leadbitters to check on how things are going and whether they require any further advice or assistance.
